Two Good Tools, Two Completely Different Meters

Zipchat and Rep AI are both serious AI chatbots for Shopify. Both read your catalog, both answer shoppers around the clock, and both have merchants who swear by them. If you are choosing between them, the feature lists will not settle it, because the real difference is the meter running underneath.

Zipchat bills you per AI reply. Rep AI bills you per visitor, whether or not that visitor ever opens the chat. The same store can be the cheap customer on one and the expensive customer on the other, and which way it flips depends entirely on your traffic and how often people chat. This post walks the actual math, with every number pulled from the two App Store listings on the same day. For the wider landscape beyond these two, our Shopify chatbot hub covers what storefront AI should do end to end.

Neither one is universally cheaper. The billing unit decides, and the sections below show where each meter wins.

The Billing Unit Decides Everything

Zipchat defines its unit like this on its pricing page: any response the AI sends counts, "whether in the chat widget, email, or a connected messaging channel like WhatsApp or Instagram. Each outbound AI message counts as one reply." Zipchat also publishes its own conversion estimate, which is that 1,500 replies cover around 600 conversations. That works out to roughly 2.5 replies per conversation, and it is the number we use below since it is the vendor's own math.

Rep AI's meter is simpler and stranger. You pay for visitors, not conversations. The Starter plan covers 10,000 monthly visitors, Basic covers 25,000, Standard covers 50,000, and every plan charges $12 per 1,000 visitors beyond the cap. A visitor who bounces in eight seconds without touching the chat still counts against your plan.

The consequence is that these two tools price the same store in opposite directions. Traffic-heavy and chat-light favors Zipchat. Traffic-light and chat-heavy favors Rep AI. Our Shopify AI chatbot pricing guide covers all five billing models vendors use if you want the full map.

The Math at 25,000 Visitors and 800 Chats

Take a mid-size store with 25,000 monthly visitors and 800 chat conversations a month.

On Zipchat: 800 conversations at the vendor's own 2.5 replies each is about 2,000 AI replies. The $129 Growth plan caps at 1,500 replies, so it does not fit. You either buy the $249 Pro plan (3,000 replies) or run Growth plus two overage packs at $129 + $98 = $227 with zero headroom left. Realistically you are at $249 a month.

On Rep AI: 25,000 visitors lands exactly on the Basic cap, so you pay $209 a month. Rep AI wins this store by $40, with one caveat: you are sitting on the cap, and one good week pushes you into $12-per-1,000 overage territory.

Now flip the chat rate. Same 25,000 visitors, but only 200 conversations a month, which is about 500 replies. Zipchat's Starter plan covers that for $49, sitting exactly on its cap with no headroom. Rep AI still charges $209, because its meter never noticed that nobody chatted. Zipchat wins this store by $160.

And then the spike scenario, which is the sharpest edge in this comparison. A TikTok video doubles your traffic to 50,000 visitors while your chat volume stays at 800 conversations. Zipchat's bill does not move, still $249. Rep AI jumps to the $368 Standard tier, or to $209 plus $300 in overage if you do not upgrade in time. A viral moment bills Rep AI even when nobody chats.

ScenarioZipchatRep AI
25K visitors, 800 chats$249$209
25K visitors, 200 chats$49$209
50K visitors (spike), 800 chats$249$368

Where Zipchat Wins

  • Channels. The listing covers chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. If you want AI answering DMs and not just the storefront widget, Zipchat is the stronger fit of the two.
  • Cheaper entry. $49 gets you a real paid plan. Rep AI's paid plans start at $104.
  • Traffic spikes cost nothing. The reply meter only moves when the AI actually talks.
  • Merchant satisfaction. A 5.0 rating across 159 reviews, with only 5 of them below five stars. That is one of the cleanest review profiles in the category.
  • Integrations. Gorgias, Zendesk, Re:amaze, Klaviyo, Omnisend, and Brevo, plus the WhatsApp Business API.

One thing to confirm when you install: the free tier (120 AI replies a month) appears on the Shopify App Store listing, but zipchat.ai's own pricing page shows no free plan. Check which offer you actually see. We compare Zipchat against Carti feature by feature in Carti vs Zipchat.

Where Rep AI Wins

  • Behavioral engagement. The listing's own words: "Behavioral AI spots hesitating shoppers and opens an AI chat to save the sale." Rep AI leans harder into reading shopper behavior and starting conversations than Zipchat does.
  • High chat rates get free coverage. Because the meter counts visitors, a store where an unusually large share of visitors chat pays nothing extra for the volume. In the 800-chat example above, that is exactly how Rep AI comes out $40 cheaper.
  • Ecommerce stack integrations. Attentive, Gorgias, Klaviyo, Postscript, Tapcart, and Zendesk.
  • Predictable tiers if your traffic is stable. A store with steady traffic knows its Rep AI bill months in advance.

Watch the product caps, though. Rep AI's tiers also cap catalog size at 100, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 products, which is a real constraint for large catalogs that the headline pricing hides. The full feature-by-feature breakdown is in Carti vs Rep AI.

What Merchants Actually Complain About

The complaint records are not symmetric, so we will not pretend they are.

Rep AI's complaints cluster on billing and intrusiveness. In a one-star review dated February 25, 2026, the merchant American Hospital Supply wrote "paid for annual subscription - shut me off after 8 months" and reported being unable to view billing history. In a three-star review from January 27, 2026, Unicorn Snot described the proactive chat as leaving shoppers "kind of annoyed and frustrated." Both are single reports among 92 reviews, and you can read them in context on the Rep AI review page.

Zipchat's record is genuinely strong, and its few complaints are not about pricing. Only 5 of 159 reviews land below five stars. Two themes do appear. A merchant (Giftsmiths, April 2025) reported receiving unsolicited emails from Zipchat disparaging a competitor, and an earlier review reported the widget persisting after uninstall. You can read both on the Zipchat review page. Zipchat's real cost risk is arithmetic rather than anecdote: the $49-per-250 overage is the most expensive overage rate in this comparison, and it compounds quickly at scale.

The Flat-Rate Third Path

There is a version of this decision where the meter question simply goes away. Carti is the flat-rate third option. The Free plan covers 50 AI conversations a month, and Pro is a flat $39/month with unlimited conversations, so a traffic spike and a support surge both cost you exactly the same. You get catalog-wide grounding, proactive selling, revenue attribution, and 92-language support out of the box, with a 14-day free trial on Pro.

Two honest concessions. Carti does not do WhatsApp or Instagram outbound, so if AI in the DMs is the priority, Zipchat genuinely wins there. And Carti does not market a behavioral-intent engine on Rep AI's terms, although it does run proactive engagement with exit-intent and browsing triggers. If you are weighing Zipchat against every alternative rather than just Rep AI, our Zipchat alternatives breakdown ranks the field.

How to Decide

Two questions settle it.

  1. How much traffic do you have relative to how much chat you get? High traffic with a low chat rate favors Zipchat, because Rep AI would bill you for thousands of visitors who never say a word. Low traffic with a high chat rate favors Rep AI, because Zipchat's reply meter would run hot.
  2. How stable is your traffic? If you run ads, drop products, or ever go viral, Rep AI's visitor meter turns your best weeks into your most expensive ones. If your traffic is steady, that risk mostly disappears.

If the answer to either question is "it changes month to month," that volatility is itself an argument for flat pricing. Our 10 best Shopify chatbots roundup puts both tools in the wider field if you want the full scorecard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Zipchat compare to Rep AI for handling high-volume customer inquiries?

Zipchat handles high inquiry volume with tiered reply caps, so heavy chat months mean a higher tier or $49-per-250 overage packs. Rep AI does not meter conversations at all, which makes it the calmer choice when inquiry volume is high relative to traffic. At 800 conversations a month on a 25,000-visitor store, Rep AI works out to $209 against Zipchat's $249 by the vendors' own published numbers.

Q: Is Zipchat cheaper than Rep AI?

Sometimes, and the billing unit decides. Zipchat is far cheaper for stores with lots of traffic but few conversations, where its $49 Starter plan can beat Rep AI's $209 by $160 a month. Rep AI comes out cheaper for stores where a large share of visitors chat, because it never charges for conversation volume.

Q: Does Rep AI charge for visitors who never open the chat?

Yes. Rep AI's plans are capped by monthly visitors, and every visitor counts against the cap whether or not they interact with the chat. Beyond the cap it bills $12 per 1,000 additional visitors, which is why a traffic spike raises the bill even if nobody chats.

Q: How many conversations does Zipchat's 1,500-reply plan actually cover?

By Zipchat's own published estimate, about 600 conversations. Each outbound AI message counts as one reply, and Zipchat's math works out to roughly 2.5 replies per conversation. Estimate your monthly conversation count, multiply by 2.5, and check that number against the tier caps before you pick a plan.

Q: Can Rep AI work alongside Gorgias?

Yes. Gorgias is on Rep AI's published integration list, so Rep AI can hand conversations off to a Gorgias-run support team. Zipchat also integrates with Gorgias, so neither tool forces you to change helpdesks. If Gorgias itself is the decision you are weighing, our Gorgias alternatives breakdown covers that fork.

The Bottom Line

Zipchat and Rep AI are both good at what they meter. Zipchat sells you AI replies with multichannel reach and a spotless review record. Rep AI sells you covered traffic with behavioral engagement. Run your own visitor and conversation numbers through the tables above before you commit, because the winner flips depending on which number is bigger.

And if you would rather stop doing meter math entirely, there is the flat path.
